Thank you to all who attended the BCF-UAW info sessions in March. The meetings were productive in deciding what steps to take next as we continue negotiations with the Barnard administration. To stay strong at the bargaining table, we need to build greater awareness on campus about our union and our fight for a fair contract—among students, colleagues, and other members of the Barnard community. In that spirit, we’re launching Contingent Faculty Awareness Week, beginning Monday, April 11. We hope all Barnard contingent faculty can join in the following activities:
1) Teach-in on the Diana Center lawn, Wednesday 4/13, 12-1pm: Drop by to hear distinguished contingent faculty speak on issues related to teaching, learning, and precarious labor in higher education. Members of the Bargaining and Organizing Committees will be on hand to answer questions about our union.
2) Leafleting outside the Diana Center, Wednesday 4/13, 4:45-6:15pm: The Emily Gregory Award dinner, an event honoring student-nominated teachers, will take place at the Diana Center on Wednesday evening, starting with a 5pm cocktail hour. Join fellow members of BCF-UAW outside the building to celebrate the nominees and distribute flyers on the value of teaching.
3) Wear your button, all week: Wearing a BCF-UAW “United for a Fair Contract” button is an easy and effective way to increase our visibility on campus. Wear yours during class and around campus; post one at your desk or on your office door. Don’t have a button? Just email Siobhan at sburke28 at gmail dot com with “Button” in the subject line, and we’ll get one to you ASAP.
4) #WeTeachBarnard, all week: Help us spread the word about our union online. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, where we’ve already begun to post contingent faculty testimonials. Please like and share these widely. We’ll be tagging posts about contingent faculty with #WeTeachBarnard, and we invite you to do the same.
We’re looking forward to the week ahead and hope to see you at Wednesday’s events! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
